John de Mol on creating Reality TV and why Utopia flopped in the U.S.

John de Mol

If there’s one thing the Dutch can be proud of, it’s our contribution to Reality Television.  In John de Mol, the Dutch have an Entertainment King, the creator of shows like Big Brother, Deal or No Deal, Fear Factor and of course The Voice.  Earlier this month, John’s production company Talpa was sold to British ITV.  The Hollywood Reporter visited John in Hilversum to ask him about the effect that this sale might have on his personal and professional life, and about the future of reality TV.
